KSL: Vipers v Lightning @ Ageas 14/8/16

Sunday afternoon and the final two group games to decide which team finishes top and gets a bye into the Final – three of four teams playing could mathematically do it.  Vipers won the toss and batted, Edwards looking still slightly out of sorts after her enforced concussion absence, but Bates at the other end went big early with the top 5 all making double figures, despite NZ bat McGlashan being cleaned up by a Lightning skipper Elwiss full-toss, only for it to be signalled no ball. The end of the innings Lightning seemed to be rushing through their overs, perhaps worried about cut off times, with Vipers closing on 156-4.

Lightning opened relatively slower, against NZ spinner Neilson and Kent left-arm pacer Farrant. The introduction of Linsey Smith, equal lead wicket taker going into the game despite not playing the opening game, in the 5th over, opened the wicket column with the wicket of SA van Neikerk, followed two balls later by NZ allrounder Devine for a duck. In her next over Smith trapped E Jones lbw and Lightning were reeling at 36-3 in the 7th. Aussie allrounder Perry tried to tie the innings together, but veteran England allrounder Brindle did her best to disrupt those plans, disposing of three wickets, including Perry. Local Hampshire left armer Katie George who impressed in the first game got in on the act with a sharp stumping by Rudd and a catch in the deep, and NZ skipper Bates took the final took the final two to leave Lightning all out with 7 balls left and 60 runs behind.

Vipers top the group and despite Storm also getting a bonus point, they will play off against Lightning for the chance to face the Vipers for the title – English weather permitting of course!
